Smart Fabrics Conference Titles from Jordan Graves on Vimeo.

Project for MOME 408 Multiplatform Media Brand Packaging, Winter 2012. We had to make an opening title sequence for an event and I went with the Smart Fabrics Conference in Miami FL, April 17-19th 2012. http://www.smartfabricsconference.com/home.aspx There's a few things I want to tweak over Spring Break, but since I got asked to put it up already, here it is!

First Project in my Intro to Fibers class. We had to use dying, printing and embroidery techniques, and create something based on the theme "Where The Wild Things Grow." Mine was inspired by a combination of fractal patterns and bright Fauvist colors. It was my first time using a lot of these techniques and I had a lot of fun with it.

Felting Project for 3D Fibers, Winter 2011. Merino Wool and Black Diamond Carbonized Bamboo Fiber nuno felted onto 18 yards of tulle and 54 feet of LED rope.

During my research and exploration of felting, what was most interesting to me was how important felt was in society, yet it continues to be such an under-appreciated fiber. We use felt and other non-woven materials for a wide variety of industrial uses today, but it goes unnoticed in our technological world. It was impressive to me how long of a history felt has, and how it has been able to stand strong next to technological developments.

In my project I really wanted to explore the importance of felt while noting its understatement in society. A property of felt is it's ability to bind other fibers together, and my project depends on this property. Because of the felted strips, the LED rope is able to stay contained in the fabric. Similar to felt's role in society today, this important function may be gone unnoticed, just as new technology is seen as superior, while the felt may be seen as purely decorative.

The security guards at Wallin probably thought I was crazy, but I had a ton of fun recording this outside. I can't get over how gorgeous the tulle reacts to light.

First project for my 3D Fibers class, Winter 2012. Just some tests with projecting video onto fabric in water. It was interesting to compare fabrics and see which ones kept their form, how the interacted with light, etc. i'd love to explore this more with a really good camera, because the light was absolutely brilliant watching it in real life. This video is a bit long, but I wanted to document as many clips as possible.

If you're interested in learning more about the project, check out my "process book" website!
